Signs you May Need Root Canal Therapy

March 19, 2018Dr. Dale Spadafora

Did you know a persistent toothache may be warning you of a dying tooth? Root canal therapy is used to save a dying tooth that is threatening your oral health. In fact, by emptying the tooth of its damaged tissue, our Hermitage dentist will be able to preserve your tooth and restore your healthy smile. However, if a severely damaged tooth is neglected, it may need to be extracted over time. Seeking treatment before your condition worsens will help avoid serious repercussions in the future.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a surgical procedure that consists of cleaning out a severely damaged tooth. Our teeth are made up of pulp, which are soft connective tissues, nerves, and blood vessels that help keep our teeth alive and are responsible for sensation.

When a person experiences a traumatic accident, decay, or a deep cavity, those tissues can become damaged beyond repair. If this occurs, the patient will have to undergo a root canal treatment to restore it back to health. The surgical procedure then consists of making a small hole in the affected area and subsequently, emptying out the tooth of the deteriorating tissue. Once the pulp has been removed, the empty tooth can be used as a natural dental implant.

Contrary to popular belief, tooth extraction isn’t always the best or only solution. In fact, removing damaged teeth may lead to more dental health problems and expenses. With root canal therapy, you’ll be able to avoid costly expenses that come with restorative procedures, ease painful symptoms, avoid tooth extraction, and conserve your natural tooth in the process.

Signs You Need Root Canal Therapy

Living with a dying tooth isn’t always excruciating. For some individuals, their symptoms may not be immediately noticeable, leading to delayed treatment. Because of this, it’s important to visit your dentist regularly. Dr. Spadafora will be able to identify dental health problems before they damage your smile

Although symptoms vary from patient to patient, there are common indicators of a damaged tooth in need of treatment. Some serious signs to look out for include:

  • Sensitivity to cold or hot foods and drinks
  • Abscess or small bumps in the gums
  • Tenderness or sensitivity when chewing
  • Severe pain and toothaches that don’t subside

Prevention

Dental health problems can almost always be prevented with proper hygiene care. Prevention starts at home. By practicing good oral care on a daily basis, you’ll be able to keep your teeth clean and aid in the prevention of diseases, infections, and cavities. Neglecting to care for your teeth will endanger your smile and lead to serious consequences.

Additionally, you can increase your chances of a long-lasting smile by visiting your dentist for biannual checkups. Professional cleanings will ensure that your teeth remain healthy throughout the year.
