Nothing ruins your bi-annual trip to the dentist more than the news that you need a dental crown. If you’ve had this type of treatment before, you know that it takes at least two long appointments to finish the job, and that’s only if nothing goes wrong with your temporary crown. You also have to wait at least two or more weeks for your new permanent tooth to arrive. Well, Dr. Dale Spadafora has great news for you, with CEREC in Hermitage, PA your crown can now be completed in one appointment.
When Do I Need a Crown?
A crown is used to restore a tooth that needs more repair than a filling can provide. Teeth that are fractured, chipped or have had root canal therapy need a crown to strengthen the natural tooth and restore proper function. Crowns can also be used in cosmetic dentistry to restore teeth that are damaged or discolored. Crowns are tooth colored and naturally complete your smile.
Crowns used to take two long appointments with your dentist. The first appointment was to prepare your tooth and patients would then leave with a temporary crown in place. The restoration would be sent to a dental laboratory, and it was there that permanent crowns were fabricated. This took around two to three weeks, during which time temporary crowns sometimes would crack or even come off, requiring patients to return to the dentist. Finally your permanent crown would be placed at the second long appointment. Sounds like a pretty complicated process, right? Well, all that is changing with CEREC!
What is CEREC?
CEREC is a machine that actually mills a custom designed crown in about one hour. Dr. Spadafora will take a 3D image of your tooth and design your crown through this image. This is more good news because it means that the preparation process is even more streamlined, and you won’t have to endure messy traditional impressions. 3D imaging is much more comfortable for the patient and efficient for the doctor.
The CEREC machine will then create your permanent crown, using tooth colored durable material that will restore the function of your tooth, while naturally complementing your smile. Dr. Spadafora will place your permanent crown at the same visit so you will leave with your restoration completed in one visit. CEREC can also be used for inlays, onlays, and veneers, which are smaller restorations used to fill in cavities or cover discoloration.
